Three Young Green Herons Woodcut, State One

Three Very Young Green Herons at Manayunk Canal. First State Proof of Woodcut by Ken Januski.

I've finally bitten the bullet and started something more developed on those fascinating young Green Herons seen a week or so ago along the Manayunk Canal. I did show a quick watercolor and pen sketch about that time. Since then I've done a fairly developed pencil sketch for a woodcut or linocut. This is based on that drawing.

I'm not yet sure whether I'll add a second woodblock with color. I'm tempted to due to the rich coloration of Green Herons. On the other hand I do like the stark contrast of this black and white print so far.

I like the contrast of the B&W on this as well.

I've never seen young green herons, but I've seen black crowned and yellow crowned night-heron nestlings in Florida - so ugly that they are somehow (almost) cute.

Hi Gabrielle,

We've never seen the young night heron nestlings though we have seen many photos. They are striking. I always feel like I'm cheating a bit when I choose herons as subjects because they have such amazing shapes and often a combination of elegance and almost ugly beauty.

It looks like I'll at least do a black and white version of this and then perhaps later a second edition of them which includes color.

Speaking of young birds there are young peregrines in Manayunk right now, in and around the church at Pretzel Park. We got a brief look last night.
